Digital Single Market: Bridging the Gap
05/03/2016 @ 09:30 - 16:30
On Tuesday 3 May 2016, the British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium will organise a conference on the Digital Single Market gathering eminent speakers who will talk about the beneficial impact of digitalisation across a wide range of sectors. Business leaders, representatives from trade associations as well as numerous EU institutions officials will express their views and address different digital-related topics of strategic importance on future challenges for European businesses.
After officially launching the Digital Agenda for Europe in 2010, the European Commission has adopted a Digital Single Market Strategy in May 2015. It has set 16 key actions built on three pillars to break down the existing barriers and complete the DSM. By the end of 2016, the Commission will have adopted a large number of legislative proposals aimed to harmonise the current fragmented market. This encompasses a broad range of policy issues including but not limited to data protection, content portability, parcel delivery, cloud computing, copyright, geo-blocking, e-government or e-privacy.
The potential growth in a digital economy is considerable. A full functioning DSM is estimated around €415 billion per year. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges to bridge the gap between Member States as well as between public and private sectors. This conference will be an opportunity to listen to experts discussing about the latest regulatory and technological developments related to financial services, healthcare, and manufacturing.
